The 49 Year Old Celebrity Ski Mountaineer Hilary Nelson’s Body Found in Nepal

According to Sachindra Kumar Yadav, an official with the tourism department in Nepal, renowned American ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson was found dead on Wednesday. Her body has been taken to a forensic laboratory in Kathmandu for autopsy. She was 49 years old.

On Monday, Hilaree Nelson O’Neill and her partner Jim Morrison climbed to the top of Manaslu, which is the world’s eighth highest peak. She vanished after skiing began. While search operations were hampered by bad weather on Monday, Nepalese rescue workers were able to utilize a helicopter to look for Ms. Nelson early Tuesday morning. “Two unsuccessful helicopter search attempts had been made earlier to rescue Hilaree Nelson,” Phurte Sherpa told the Associated Press about his injuries from the avalanche.

She was said to have fallen into a 600-meter hole in the ice, known as a crevasse, only 15 minutes after arriving at the summit of the 26,781-foot peak according to eyewitnesses. A local guide who had been accompanying them told reporters that other climbers stated that “Nelson slipped and fell on the other side of the crest.” Morrison was supposedly able to make it back to camp safely afterwards.

Ms. Nelson and Mr. Morrison are at the top of their game when it comes to mountain climbing and cross-country skiing. The couple, who reside in Colorado near the Rocky Mountains, have conquered several of world’s most daunting peaks during their numerous expeditions across 16 countries. Ms. Nelson even holds the record for being the first woman to summit two 8,000 meter peaks—Everest and Lhotse—within 24 hours!

​​“She’s seen as this athlete, trying to maximize her physical capabilities, but to me she was very soulful,” says Taylor Rees, a filmmaker who collaborated with Hilaree on several projects. “She faced her challenges and demons with such honesty and vulnerability and grace.” Tylor added.

The Adventurous Career

Nelson was born on December 13, 1972, and grew up in Seattle. She started skiing at the age of three in Stevens Pass. She was in a romantic relationship with fellow skier Jim Morrison and the couple have two children.

Nelson has been a part of over 40 expeditions, and she was the recipient of a National Geographic Explorers Grant. Also, she has made first ski descents in various locations such as Baffin and South Georgia Islands, Argentina, Kamchatka, Russia, Tetons, etc. Her writing skills have landed her work with some pretty amazing publications such as National Geographic Adventure Magazine, The Ski Journaland Outside journal just to list a few.
