Jennifer Aniston: ‘It was really hard trying to get pregnant’ with IVF

Jennifer Aniston is opening up about a challenging time in her past when she was trying to have children. In an interview with Allure for its December cover, published Wednesday, the actress revealed that she pursued in vitro fertilization and other strategies to try to get pregnant during a period of years ago – all while weathering speculation and tabloid gossip about baby bumps and possible motherhood.

In an interview with the magazine, Aniston spoke about her difficult journey to have a baby, saying “It was really hard. I was going through IVF, drinking Chinese teas, you name it. I would’ve given anything if someone had said to me, ‘Freeze your eggs. Do yourself a favor.’ You just don’t think it.” Reflecting on where she is today, she said “The ship has sailed.”

Aniston has ‘zero regrets’

Aniston, now 53 years old, said that she has “zero regrets.”

“I feel a little relieved because there is no more indecisiveness. I don’t have to think about that anymore.”

The “Friends” star was married to Brad Pitt from 2000 to 2005 and Justin Theroux from 2015 to 2017. She told Allure that she is single now and not interested in getting married again, saying, “I’d love a relationship. Who knows? There are moments I want to just crawl up in a ball and say, ‘I need support.’ It would be wonderful to come home and fall into somebody’s arms and say, ‘That was a tough day.'”

Aniston expressed gratitude for having gone through tough times, saying, “I would’ve been stuck being this person that was so fearful, so nervous, so unsure of who they were… And now, I don’t (expletive) care.”

She continued: “I’ve spent so many years protecting my story about IVF. I’m so protective of these parts because I feel like there’s so little that I get to keep to myself. The (world) creates narratives that aren’t true, but with this film project [Dumplin’], I can tell the truth. There’s a sense of freedom in telling the truth–protective no more.”

Other celebrities opening up about infertility struggles

Aniston joins a long list of celebrities who have been open about IVF, egg freezing, infertility and pregnancy loss, including Gabrielle Union, Chrissy Teigen, Rebel Wilson and Michelle Obama.

Teigen shared earlier this year that she was undergoing IVF again and asked for privacy.

“Please stop asking people whether they’re pregnant,” she said. She is now expecting her third child with husband John Legend.

What is IVF?

If you or your partner are struggling with infertility, in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be a viable solution. IVF is a medical procedure during which eggs are fertilized by sperm outside of the body and then placed in the uterus. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 5 women aged 15-49 who have no prior births struggles to get pregnant after one year of unprotected sex.About 25% of women have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying a pregnancy to term. Egg freezing is a method of preserving eggs for later use, which involves harvesting them from ovaries, then freezing and storing them. An egg that has been frozen can be thawed and combined with sperm in a lab for IVF at a later date.
