How Eddie Redmayne’s parents helped him achieve his dreams

Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne, who won an Academy Award playing Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” and most recently portrayed a serial killer opposite Jessica Chastain in Netflix’s “The Good Nurse,” spoke with Willie Geist on Sunday TODAY’s “Sunday Sitdown.” He discussed how his supportive family contributed to his success and that despite their advice, he had no backup plan if acting didn’t work out.

Redmayne began acting when he was just 10 years old, going to the Jackie Palmer Studios Stage School in London with future famous classmates like James Corden and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. As one of five children, Redmayne’s father worked as a banker while his mother managed a relocation business.

Eddie Redmayne stated in an interview with Willie Geist that he “loved music and singing and acting at school.” He continued to say that his parents were very supportive of whatever hobbies him or his brothers showed interest in. Even though none of his family members had a background related to theater, film, or music, Redmayne followed his instincts and is now successful actor.

Redmayne studied art history at Trinity College and performed in Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” His performance caught the eye of a talent agent, which led him to take acting more seriously as a potential career. Even still, his parents encouraged him to go to university and have a backup plan in case acting didn’t work out.

“I thought maybe a curator?” he said when asked what other jobs he considered.

Thankfully, Redmayne never needed that backup plan.

Redmayne’s acting career took off when he was cast in the 2012 movie “Les Miserables.” Two years later, he played physicist Stephen Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” – a role that received high praise from Hawking himself. Redmayne is still adjusting to being an Oscar winner and a household name after starring in the Harry Potter spinoff film “Fantastic Beasts,” but says it’s been an amazing journey so far.

For his current role in “The Good Nurse,” which is based on a true story, Redmayne had to get inside the head of Charles Cullen, a serial killer who was a nurse and killed 400 patients over 16 years in different New Jersey and Pennsylvania hospitals. His crimes were discovered by another nurse played by Chastain. Even though he didn’t do method acting for this role, mainly because of his family.

Redmayne, who has a six and four-year-old, joked that staying in Charlie Cullen would not have been enjoyable for anyone–including his wife. He then went on to say how happy he is with his career choice.

“I love what I do,” he said. “And you don’t take it for granted, because it’s a wonderful existence.” His parents can tell that he made the right profession decision based off of how passionate Redmayne sounds when talking about his
